Our Trustees

The Board of Trustees oversees all of the work that we do. The trustees come from diverse backgrounds, offering a wide range of skills, knowledge and support. They all share a passion for the work that we do.

Tony Murphy
Chair

Tony is our Chair, having been a trustee since May 2017. He lives in Hertford, where he moved after living most of his post-University life in London. His career has mostly involved negotiating and bidding for commercial contracts in telecoms, IT and facilities management. He brings this skill to bear in our fundraising activities and in running his consultancy business.

In his spare time, he coaches at the Hertford Company of Archers and enjoys pub quizzes.

Gary Cansick
Treasurer

Gary, our Treasurer is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and has headed up his own Chartered Accountancy practice locally for over 30 years.

He joined as a Trustee in 2018, serves on the Finance Sub-committee, and working and living locally, sees this as a real opportunity to make a contribution to what is such an essential organisation within the community.

James Dowson
Company Secretary

James is a partner at a local firm of solicitors and specialises in commercial property work. He has been involved with East Herts Citizens Advice since 2008 and is the Company Secretary dealing with governance and legal matters.

James lives in Saffron Walden and enjoys playing 5-a-side football and ‘Real Tennis’.

Christine Gillham
Communications and Risk

Christine has worked in the voluntary sector for over 20 years. She started her career with a national charity based in London and following a move to Bishop’s Stortford with her family, decided to work in her local community joining Citizens Advice East Herts, where she managed the Advice Service Transition Fund project for two years.

Since 2016, Christine has been working for a Hertfordshire wide charity in the Health and Social Care Sector. Christine sits on the risk sub-committee.

Barry Hunt
Communications

An award-winning journalist and editor, Barry has spent his entire career in the media industry. In November 2016, he started his own communications agency offering social media and content marketing services to businesses in the UK and overseas. He also helps to run Ware To Do Business, a not-for-profit business to business networking group.

Barry lives in Ware with his wife and two children.

Ballu Sesay
Equality & Diversity,
Research & Campaigns

Ballu has an honours degree in Law and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice. She currently works in a major government department defending Private Law Claims and Human Rights/Judicial Review Claims. Prior to that she worked as a Programme Manager at a London University.

Ballu has experience in the private and third sector, most notably working on an ambitious and innovative poverty alleviation project in West Suffolk and is a mentor at the Prince’s Trust. Ballu leads on Equality & Diversity, People Management and Research & Campaigns.

Richard Smith
Finance and Risk

Richard has been involved with a number of national charities over the last 20 years and enjoys using his business and commercial experience to help them develop. He joined Citizens Advice East Herts as a trustee as he wanted to get involved in a local charity that make a significant impact and has real reach. A father of two grown up sons, he is particularly active in the community as a trustee for a number of charities and a local Magistrate. Richard sits on the finance and risk sub-committees.

Rachael Williamson
Trustee

Rachael has worked in the public and third sector for over 20 years. She started her career in the civil service where she worked in several government departments before volunteering with Citizens Advice East Herts. Since then, she has worked in a number of third sector roles spanning fundraising, communications, research, policy and project management. Since 2021 Rachael has worked for the Chartered Institute of Housing as their head of policy and external affairs.

She lives in Bishop’s Stortford with her family.

Jane joined as a Trustee at the end of 2023.  She served as a Town Councillor in Hertford for nearly 20 years, including a year as Mayor of Hertford.  She has experience as a Trustee for a number of local charities, including on the Board of Hertford Museum since 2007.

Professionally, Jane has had a varied career in a range of sectors, covering charitable, public and commercial organisations.  She currently runs a UK-wide trade association based in Hertfordshire.  

Nikky Anderson
Human Resources

Nikky recently joined Citizens Advice East Herts in her first trustee role. Nikky has lived in Hertford for the past fifteen years with her small children and is passionate about supporting causes in her local community. Nikky has spent her career to-date in Human Resources, working in a variety of 'people-centric' roles across different industries. Nikky is keen to use her skills and experience to work alongside the Board of Trustees and support the local communities in which Citizens Advice East Herts aims to serve.

Natalie Edwards
Trustee

Natalie is a star-gazer who loves observing the beauty of nature. Her career has mainly been in the civil service and charity sectors. She has a passion for ensuring everyone can thrive and has access to the support they need to do so.
